Alta Vista Elementary among 36 Florida schools eligible for 2027 Exceeding Expectations Award
Alta Vista Elementary School is one of just 36 schools across Florida identified as eligible for consideration as a 2027 Exceeding Expectations Award School, according to Sarasota County Schools.
Staff learned the news at a recent faculty meeting, according to a Sarasota County Schools post on X published Oct. 28. The district also shared the announcement on LinkedIn.
The recognition comes from the ECTAC Exceeding Expectations Project, which has spotlighted high-performing, high-poverty public schools since 2012.
Being identified as eligible does not guarantee the award. Eligible schools undergo additional review before final selection, according to ECTAC's website.
What the award measures
The Exceeding Expectations Project recognizes Florida public schools "achieving exceptional results while serving high concentrations of students experiencing poverty," according to ECTAC.
Each year, the organization reviews publicly available school grade, student group and enrollment data to identify schools demonstrating strong achievement and continuous improvement.
Schools that clear the initial data screen are reviewed with district and school leaders to verify participation and eligibility. Award Schools must be open to all students and cannot restrict enrollment through admissions criteria or screening processes, according to ECTAC.
The 36-school pool for the 2027 cycle is smaller than the 2026 cycle, when 61 schools met initial criteria out of 3,437 reviewed statewide, according to Collier County Public Schools.
A growing school
Alta Vista is in the middle of a significant expansion. The school welcomed sixth-grade students to campus for the first time during the 2026-27 school year as part of a multiyear plan to grow into a K-8 facility, Your Observer reported in August.
Under the district's expansion plan, Alta Vista will add seventh grade in 2027-28 and eighth grade in 2028-29. The school also plans to introduce programming focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
Principal Meredith McArthur said in August that the faculty was eager to see older students flourish on a familiar campus.
Sarasota County is also among 11 Florida districts that maintained the state's Academically High-Performing School District designation for the 2025-26 school year, according to the Florida Department of Education. Eighteen districts statewide hold the designation.
ECTAC's annual Exceeding Expectations Conference is scheduled for June 9-11, 2027, at Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld. The conference brings educators together to share strategies and culminates in recognition of the selected Award Schools.
