Some Manatee County homeowners will have more time between required backflow tests under a rule change scheduled for 2027.

The Manatee County Commission voted 6-0 on Oct. 20 to adopt a revised Cross-Connection Control Manual that shifts testing for some residential backflow devices from annually to every two years. According to The Bradenton Times, the resolution passed as part of the consent agenda

The changes take effect Feb. 1, 2027, according to the League of Women Voters of Manatee County.

The League reported that four people who work in water safety opposed the changes, warning that reduced testing could put drinking water at risk. Utilities Director Pat Shea said the department was working on safety features for the system.

The commission approved the consent agenda 6-0.
