A water main break has shut down a stretch of Ninth Avenue West in Bradenton that runs past Manatee High School, and repairs are not expected to wrap up until Wednesday, Aug. 19, according to the Bradenton Police Department.

The closure spans Ninth Avenue West between 26th Street West and 29th Street West. Families with students at Manatee High should plan alternate routes for drop-off and pickup through at least midweek.

The Bradenton Police Department posted an initial traffic alert on X on Sunday, Aug. 16, reporting the break near 27th Street West and warning that repairs could take several hours. By 1:35 p.m. that afternoon, the timeline had grown significantly. BPD said the city's Public Works Department informed police the road would likely remain closed into Tuesday, Aug. 18, at a minimum.

The City of Bradenton confirmed crews were on site and specifically warned the closure may affect traffic near Manatee High School on Monday morning, urging drivers to find alternate routes.

Neither agency named a specific detour.

The Bradenton Herald reported that repairs are not expected to be complete until Wednesday, Aug. 19, extending the disruption well beyond the initial Monday estimate. That means school traffic near Manatee High could be affected for the first several days of the week.

BPD said the closure "could impact traffic traveling to/from Manatee High School" and asked drivers to plan accordingly.

No agency has disclosed what caused the pipe to fail. City of Bradenton Public Works is handling the repair.
