Manatee County's 911 center answers 97.5% of emergency calls in under 10 seconds. An international review board confirmed Sept. 23 that the operation meets elite standards for a ninth straight year.

The Manatee County Emergency Communications Center completed its latest reaccreditation by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch, maintaining Tri-ACE status, Bradenton Magazine reported. The designation requires excellence in all three emergency dispatch disciplines: police, fire and medical.

A rare designation few centers hold

The center first earned Tri-ACE accreditation in 2017, when it became the 13th emergency communications center in the world to hold the title. As of December 2025, only 27 agencies worldwide had achieved the designation, according to a Cobb County, Georgia, announcement when that agency earned it.

The center handles roughly 800 emergency calls every 24 hours, and every 911 call placed from Lakewood Ranch routes through it.

How Manatee compares with the national benchmark

The national standard, set by the National Emergency Number Association, requires 90% of 911 calls to be answered within 15 seconds. Manatee County's 97.5% answer rate in under 10 seconds clears both the percentage and the speed benchmarks.

"Our telecommunicators carry an incredible responsibility every time they answer a 911 call," said Mark Jones, the center's chief. "The accreditation recognizes the expertise they bring to their work and the rigorous standards they strive to meet on every call."

Monthly call reviews keep dispatchers on protocol

To keep the accreditation, the center reviews at least 238 randomly selected calls each month across police, fire and medical dispatch.

Reviewers check whether dispatchers identified the emergency correctly, determined the right response, followed protocols in sequence and provided pre-arrival instructions such as CPR or bleeding-control guidance.

District 2 Commissioner Amanda Ballard said telecommunicators are the first voice callers hear during an emergency and credited them with providing critical instructions while connecting residents with help.

All Manatee County telecommunicators hold certification from the academies in emergency medical, fire and police dispatch, according to the county's public safety division.

As of early 2026, the academies recognized 331 accredited centers of excellence among more than 3,500 dispatch centers worldwide that use its protocol system. Tri-ACE status, which requires accreditation in all three disciplines, remains far rarer.
