Lakewood Ranch varsity volleyball ended a four-match losing streak Tuesday, beating Sarasota 3-1 at home in a 6A District 11 conference match.
The Mustangs controlled the first two sets 25-16 and 25-11 before Sarasota took the third set 25-18. Lakewood Ranch closed it out in the fourth 25-15. Juliana Neri led the Mustangs with 15 kills and four blocks, and Isabella Lorenzo added 14 kills while hitting .609, according to MaxPreps.
Quick turnaround after a four-match skid
The win was a quick turnaround. Sarasota had beaten the Mustangs 2-0 in a tournament match just three days earlier, on Saturday. That loss capped a skid that began Sept. 18 with tournament losses to Newsome and St. Petersburg, followed by a 2-0 loss to The Villages Charter earlier Saturday.
Head coach J. Leupold, who reported the final score to MaxPreps, has the Mustangs at 11-8 overall and 2-2 in district play. They sit third in 6A District 11 with a No. 138 state ranking. Both district losses came against Riverview Sarasota, 3-1 on Sept. 1 and 3-0 on Sept. 15. Sarasota dropped to 10-9 with the loss.
The Mustangs have been strong on their home court this season, posting a 5-1 record there.
Lund, Truong and Lorenzo lead the way
Setter and middle blocker Adalynn Lund has been one of the Mustangs' top performers this fall. In the Sept. 1 loss at Riverview Sarasota, Lund posted 16 assists, 10 kills and nine digs, according to a MaxPreps recap. Claire Truong added seven digs, six kills and two aces in that same match. Lorenzo also stood out in a 3-0 win over Lemon Bay on Sept. 8, recording 10 kills and seven digs.
One district match left on the schedule
The Mustangs played at Hardee on Thursday; no score had been reported as of Friday. They host Braden River on Tuesday and Palmetto on Thursday, Oct. 1, both at 7 p.m. Their final district match of the regular season is Oct. 6 at Parrish Community, followed by a trip to Bradenton Christian on Oct. 8.
