Lakewood Ranch High School’s girls cross country team won the Clearwater Central Catholic Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 17, finishing first among 17 scoring teams in the girls varsity race.
The Mustangs scored 30 points, ahead of Calvary Christian’s 75, according to the official meet results.
The Mustangs raced Saturday, Oct. 17, in Clearwater. The boys varsity squad finished second, with senior Colton Prater winning the individual title.
Four girls placed in the top 10 on the varsity side, according to Mustangs Ahead, the school's athletics publication. Freshman Avery Webster led the Mustangs with a second-place finish. Freshman Tatum Browne took fourth, senior Addison Shear placed fifth and senior Mackenzie Walker finished seventh.
"That felt like real cross country with the muddy course and the hills with trails," Browne said, according to Mustangs Ahead.
The course description on MileSplit listed wooded trails, two loops, small hills, sand, rocks and potential mud. The meet limited varsity entries to seven runners per team.
On the boys side, Prater's individual win paced a second-place team finish. Senior Jacob Gomez placed fourth and junior Jake Fellin finished 10th.
The girls junior varsity team also won, scoring 19 points to Palm Harbor University’s 49, according to the official results. The boys JV did not have enough runners to post a team score.
Shear and Walker, both seniors, have helped lead the Mustangs this fall. The pair first met during the 2025 cross country season and have pushed each other since, according to a September Your Observer profile. As reported in September, Shear's personal best was 20:02.4, set at the 2025 Tri-County Championship. Walker's was 20:26.7 from the North Port Preserve Pursuit earlier this fall.
Head coach Rae Ann Darling Reed told MySuncoast in September that the 21-runner girls squad had been collecting top-three finishes all season. Darling Reed said the team had the potential to do well at state but first needed to qualify.
The school lists the Tri-County meet as the teams’ next competition on Saturday, Oct. 24. The venue should be checked with the team before attending.
