The anonymous winner of the $800 million Mega Millions jackpot sold at a Lakewood Ranch-area Wawa has claimed a $344.2 million cash payout.

Florida Lottery records updated Saturday, Aug. 29, show the winner chose the lump-sum cash option before federal taxes, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. The winner is listed as being from Bradenton and is identified as "exempt pursuant to F.S. 24.1051," meaning the name is temporarily withheld from public disclosure.

The $800 million prize is the largest lottery win in Florida since the record-setting $1.602 billion Mega Millions jackpot claimed in August 2023, which was sold at a Publix in Neptune Beach. It is also the first Florida Mega Millions jackpot since an unclaimed $36 million ticket was sold in Jacksonville that same year, WTSP reported.

The winner's name stays hidden. Under Florida law, lottery winners claiming prizes of $250,000 or more can remain anonymous for 90 days after claiming.

The winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased at Wawa No. 5185, at 14510 State Road 70 E. in Bradenton, near the intersection of State Road 70 and Lorraine Road.

The jackpot-winning ticket matched all six numbers drawn July 28: 34, 48, 49, 59 and 70, plus Mega Ball 12. It was the only ticket nationwide to hit all six. The prize ended a 37-drawing rollover streak and ranks among the 10 largest jackpots in Mega Millions history.

Florida does not levy a state income tax, but federal taxes apply to the cash payout.

When the Florida Lottery first identified the winning store on July 29, the Wawa store manager declined to discuss the jackpot with the Herald-Tribune. "We've been told that we are not allowed to talk about that," the manager said.

Wawa celebrated on July 30 by offering free coffee and fountain drinks all day at the State Road 70 location. Nancy Dulaney, Wawa's director of store operations, said in a July 30 statement that the company was "thrilled to toast the lucky customer."

Florida's previous mega-jackpot, the $1.602 billion prize in 2023, was claimed by an LLC called Saltines Holdings of Miami rather than an individual. Whether this winner took a similar route is unknown. The winner's identity could become public once the 90-day anonymity window expires, though the exact claim date has not been disclosed.
