The Library Foundation of Manatee County is bringing bestselling author James Patterson to the area next month for its biggest fundraiser of the year.
Patterson will headline the foundation's second annual Booked for Lunch fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 23, at the Palmetto Marriott Resort & Spa, 600 U.S. 41 in Palmetto. The foundation, led by Executive Director Emma Hartman, raises money for the county library system's youth literacy programs and expanded access to books.
The luncheon and conversation run from noon to 1 p.m., followed by a book signing until 2 p.m., according to the foundation's ticket page. Individual tickets range from $250 to $650. Tables seat 10 guests.
Patterson calls libraries 'The Free Store'
Patterson, a Florida resident who has sold more than 425 million books, according to the foundation, grew up visiting the public library in Newburgh, New York, where his mother worked as a teacher and at the library. In a Q&A published Sept. 22 by the foundation, he made the case for libraries in blunt terms:
"They're one of the few places where everyone is welcome, and they're one of the last truly free gifts a community can offer. I've pitched this one for years ... every library should hang a giant banner out front that says, 'The Free Store.'"
Patterson also said adults too often worry about giving kids the "right" books instead of ones they will love. His latest Alex Cross novel, "The Family Cross," is listed for an Oct. 19 release by at least one bookseller, four days before the luncheon.
Sponsorships range from $600 to $10,000
Sponsorship packages start at $600 for a Patron Partner level and climb to a $10,000 exclusive Reception Sponsor tier, according to the foundation's sponsorship page. The top package includes a pre-luncheon reception with Patterson and logo placement on the Manatee Library bookmobile wrap for 12 months.
The foundation has held events at the Lakewood Ranch Library before, including a screening of the documentary "Free for All: The Public Library" in partnership with WEDU PBS, according to the foundation's events page.
